Abstract
1,008,566. Rotary pumps and motors. H.VON HIPPEL. Dec. 29, 1961 [March 23, 1961; Oct. 27, 1961; Nov. 30, 1961], No. 46743/61. Heading F1F. A rotary pump or motor has a rotor 11 with outwardly sliding vanes 14 extending to a housing ring 1 through an annular working chamber 16 subdivided by abutments 4 and sealed laterally by packing rings 17 each of which is carried on a piston 18 urged axially by springs 29 and by the pressure of leakage fluid in chamber 20. The leakage fluid escapes through a passage 21 and either valves 22, 23 or an hydraulic motor driving e.g. an oil cooler fan. The abutments 4, four in number as described, are urged against the rotor by springs 10 and fluid pressure either from the working chamber 16 through a passage 7 or from an external source through a passage 9. The rotor has a curved outer periphery (shown at the bottom of Fig. 1) and is fixed to rings 13 connected to the shaft 26 by splines 27. Four alterantive methods of withdrawing the vanes to clear the abutments are shown in Fig. 1:-(a) a cam track 32 engages a piston 31 separated by a space 52, filled with hydraulic fluid and preferably steel, balls, from a smaller piston on which is mounted an arm connected to a vane; (b) a ball 38 in a cammed slot 32a is mounted on a lever 35; (c) a roller 43 (Fig. 2) engages a cam track 32 and moves a plunger 39; (d) a roller 46 pivots a lever 48.
