Abstract

1,008,401. Phase discriminators. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 35265/60. Addition to 850,646. Heading H3A. In a phase discriminator as described in the parent Specification, in which the discriminator D.C. output is backed off by a D.C. bias across resistor 20 produced by rectifier 19, proportional to the amplitude of the weaker signal 12, it is arranged that above a particular value of the weaker input 12 in relation to the other input 11 a rectifier 50 conducts to introduce a backing off D.C. bias from a rectifier 52, proportional to the amplitude of the other input 11. By this means the backing off bias is made proportional in each case to the weaker signal amplitude and, the output also being proportional only to the weaker signal amplitude, the phase relation for which zero output is obtained from the discriminator is made independent of the amplitudes of both signal inputs. The discriminator may be applied to stabilizing the power factor of a high frequency electric furnace, its output varying the frequency of an oscillator controlling the frequency of a grid-controlled mercury arc inverter supplying the furnace (see the parent Specification (Group XXXV), or to operating protective electrical relays.
