Abstract

1,008,087. Selective signalling systems; counters. HARRIS - INTERTYPE CORPORATION. Nov. 28, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 44958/62. Headings G4D and G4H. [Also in Divisions G1 and B6] In apparatus for determining the setting of ink fountain keys in a printing press in accordance with the density of parts of the image to be printed, a signal representing ink density is derived photo-electrically and converted to a pulse frequency signal the pulses being counted for a predetermined time. The motor 47, Fig. 7, is driven at a speed indicative of the required ink density. The motor carries a chopper disc or drives some other analogue-to-digital-converter to produce a pulse train having a frequency indicative of the ink density. Switches controlled by the scanning head hold the gate 49 open for a preset time to allow counter 50 to count the pulses. The signal to close gate 49 is differentiated at 90 to produce a pulse to energize a print solenoid 53 and, after delay in a multivibrator 91, a reset counter 54. A scale may be included between gate 49 and counter 50. Construction of counter.-Counting pulses applied to a solenoid 52 rock the lever 57 clockwise so that a pawl 60 pushes the index wheel 61 and printing wheel 56 one step clockwise against a spring 62. A further pawl 63 locks the index wheel while lever 57 returns to its rest position. The print signal energizes a solenoid 53 to actuate a hammer 68 to print the appropriate one of type characters 69 through a ribbon 72 on to a tape 70. A reset pulse applied to the coil 54 moves the rod 64 to the left disengaging pawls 60 and 63 simultaneously. The index and printing wheels are moved anti-clockwise by spring 62 until a stop 67 meets an abutment 68. Abutment 68 also limits the movement of the wheels clockwise.
