1322850 Printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 24 Nov 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 54510/71 Heading G4H Apparatus for deriving, from a train of input signals representing a text to be printed, line ending signals representing line endings in the text, comprises a register 22 for registering an adjustable line measure, a register 23 for registering the length of a line ending zone of adjustable length, a resettable counter 2 so responsive to the input signals as to count the length of text from the beginning of each line, means 5, 8, 9 &c. effective in response to each occurrence of a space code 3 included in the train of input signals either to register 12 the count of counter 2 if that count represents a length less than the line measure or to provide an overrun signal 15 if that count represents an overrun of the text beyond the line measure, and means 14, 17, 58 &c. effective in response to the overrun signal to generate a line ending signal 59 if the last count of counter 2 registerd at 12 is larger than the difference between the line measure and length of line ending zone registered in the registers 22, 23. This difference is held in 21 and compared at 17 with the count registered at 12 to give a signal at 18 in the case mentioned. If on the other hand, the comparison at 17 shows the count at 12 less than or equal to the difference in 21, the zone length in register 23 is gated 52 to 12 (where it is added in) and to a space expand register 54. In this case, comparisons at 17 will eventually produce a signal at 18 (perhaps after one or more further uses of gate 52 as above), and this causes justification computer 58 to calculate the increase in interword spacing (from the normal value which is entered into a register 60) required to bring the line ending within the line ending zone, using the contents of register 54 and the number of spaces indicated by a counter 47.
