Abstract
In the drawing of glass in cylindrical form by depositing a stream of molten glass 12 on to and around a downwardly inclined mandrel 11 rotatably mounted within a heated chamber 10, the mandrel has a circular cross-section and an unsupported discharge end comprising a plurality of removable component parts adapted for separation to allow individual tube and rod products to be formed. The chamber 10 is formed with annular heating chambers 16a, 16b, 16c; a discharge opening 17 which may be enclosed except for a relatively small opening through which the rod or tube 12b is drawn and an opening 18 through which the mandrel 11 extends to be rotatably mounted. The mandrel 11 comprises a hollow body 20 surrounded by a sleeve 25 held between an end cap and a frustoconical end 20a forming a continuation of the end portion 25a of the sleeve. The nosepiece 21 consists of a solid tapered tip member 27 seating on an intermediate member 29 with frusto-conical surfaces joining the tip 27 to the end 20a, the tip 27 having a rod 27a passing through the bore 29b of a tubular extension 29a <PICT:1008084/C1/1> <PICT:1008084/C1/2> of the member 29, both rod 27 and extension 29a passing through the bore 20b of the body 20 and secured by lock nuts 28 and 30 respectively against the end 29c of the extension 29a and against a bushing 31 on body 20. In fully assembled state, glass rod 12b is drawn downwardly from the body 12a of glass surrounding the mandrel 11. At the completion of the desired rod drawing, lock nut 28 is removed and the tip 27 is withdrawn with the glass, giving temporarily an unusable product. Air is then passed through bore 29b from an air lock both fixed to end 29 and capillary tubing drawn over the member 29. Finally, the lock nut 30 is removed and member 29 withdrawn so that regular tubing can be drawn over the ends 25a, 20a, an air lock replacing the bushing 31. Specification 111,521 is referred to.
