Abstract

[Also in Divisions A1, B5 and F2] A portable device for driving a saw, grinder, brush, hoe, or screw propeller comprises an outer frame 1 which is arranged to be attached to an operator's back and pivotally supports at two points 6, 8 and inner frame 4 carrying an engine E, and a steel wire rope W connecting the engine to a tool A, the rope being covered by a flexible metallic pipe F having its middle part covered by two inflexible pipes P1, P2, the outer of which is joined by a rod 1 to the tool A whereby, when it is moved on the inner pipe, it turns the tool to a desired position. The outer frame 1 has a pad 2 for engaging the operator's back and is held in position by straps 3. The engine E which is pivotally secured to the inner frame at an upper pivot 6 and a lower pivot 8 having a resilient mounting 7, is connected by a belt 11 and pulleys 9, 10 to a spindle 20 coupled to the wire rope W, a jockey pulley 13 being movable to engage and disengage the drive from the engine to the rope. The rope extends through the flexible metallic pipe F and is coupled at its lower end to a spindle 21, Fig. 3e, which carries the tool A and is rotatably mounted in a bearing 28, the flexible drive can be disconnected from the spindles 20, 21 of the pulley 10 and tool A by unscrewing a sleeve 22, Fig. 3b, which clamps a split conical part of an extension 24 on to the pipe F. A spring 5 surrounds the upper part of the flexible drive to limit the curvature of the drive. The first inflexible pipe P1 is secured to the pipe F by a sleeve 22<SP>11</SP> and carries an adjustable handle H1 and controls C, K for the jockey pulley 13 and the fuel supply to the engine. The second inflexible pipe P2 slides on the first and is connected by the rod 1 to the bearing 28 of the tool so that when the pipe P2 is moved on the pipe P1 by a handle H2, the inclination of the tool is altered.
