A portable mowing device of the type where the motor unit is arranged to be supported on the operator's back has several ribbon plates 9 to connect the motor and fuel tank, the. latter being directly attached to a fitting frame 2, 3. A driven pulley 14 is slidable with respect to the driving pulley 10 so that variations in load on the tool are automatically regulated. The main frame 2, 3 rigidly carries a lower support 1 with pivotal lower bracket 6, and an upper support 4 with pivotal upper bracket 7. The engine E 1 and fuel tank E 2 are braced together with ribbon plates 9. The pulley 14 is rigidly connected to the tube 12 that is slidable in tube 11, the pulley 14 being kept in tension by a spring (not shown) encased in tube 11. Wire 18 is connected at one end to tube 12 and at the other to clutch lever 21. The wire rope 35 is covered as described by Specification 1,008,015 with exceptions: 1) The inner and outer iron pipes 55, 56 are arranged concentrically without an intermediate covering of flexible metallic pipe 46 or rubber pipe 47. 2) The handles 60, 64 are arranged to be clamped to or slidable over iron pipe 55 as desired, by direct rotation of the handle. 3) Covering pipes F 1 and F 2 are fitted with pressed streaks 49 that enable the flexible assembly to be detached readily from end pieces 48. The wire rope 35 has everywhere a diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the covering pipes so that it may be withdrawn. Case piece 32 allows for longitudinal expansion of the wire rope.
