13 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a polishing machine of the type commonly known as strapping machines which permits the ready replacement of polishing belts or bands without stopping the machine, and which also permits the adjustment of the machine to polishing belts or bands of various lengths and to properly tension the same.
Second, to provide a polishing machine of this type which is very convenient and efiicient in use.
Third, to provide a polishing or strapping machine having these advantages which is simple and economical in structure and manipulation.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a polishing machine embodying the features of my invention.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail partially in vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail partially in vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail partially in vertical section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is of the multiple unit type; that is, there is a plurality of units mounted on the same pedestal and. driven from the same power source, my improvements being especially desirable for use in such an embodiment.
The pedestal l carries a head 2 having suitable bearings for the shaft 3. The shaft is provided with a centrally disposed pulley 4 connected to a suitable driving shaft or motor. The shaft 3 is provided with driving pulleys 5.
' Mounted on the head adjacent each pulley is a bracket 6 projecting forwardly and horizontally. This bracket has longitudinal slots 1 and 8 and a slideway 9 for the horizontally disposed arm I0, this arm being in effect an adjustable extension for the bracket.
The arm I0 is adjustably secured on the bracket by means of the bolt l I arranged in the slot 8 and provided with a hand nut l2 and a friction Washer or disk I3 so that the clamping bolt may be loosened through the hand nut, the arm adjusted, and effectively clamped in its adjusted position.-
The arm is provided with a fork I4 at its outer end, this fork l A! carrying a spindle for the polishing band or belt roller l 5. The spindle is preferably sectional, comprising a section l6 having a thrust collar ill on the inner side of one arm of the fork and a section l8 threaded into the other arm of the fork and provided with lock nuts I9 whereby it may be secured in its adjusted position.
The pulley is provided with a suitable ball bearing designated generally by the numeral 20, the ends of the bearing being closed by the packings it to exclude dust.
The arm is also provided with a vertical opening 22 receiving the pulley 23. This pulley is supported by a spindle 24 provided with a suitable ball bearing designated generally by the numeral 25.
A belt tensioning idler pulley 26 is provided, this being carried by a spindle 2? adjustable in the slot 1, the spindle having a clamping hand nut 28 at one end and being provided with an opposed thrust collar 29. A handle 30 is provided on the opposite end of the spindle so that when the hand nut is loosened, the spindle can be adjusted along the slot to properly tension and support the polishing belt or band 3|. The several pulleys are preferably grooved to prevent the polishing belts or bands from being displaced in manipulating of the work.
The pulley l5 is of relatively small diameter as compared to the driving pulley and the intermediate supporting pulley 23 so that the work may be slipped over the end of the arm and brought into proper engagement with the polishing belt.
Polishing machines of this type are especially designed for the polishing or buffing of work having openings or conformed so that the surfaces thereof cannot be reached by the cylindrical type of polishing or buffing wheels.
With this arrangement of parts, a polishing band or belt may be readily replaced without stopping the machine and consequently not causing the other workmen to remain idle during this operation. To accomplish this, the hand wheel [2 is loosened to allow the arm to be pushed inwardly and preferably the idler pulley 26 is also released so that it may be slipped forwardly in the slot. The old polishing band can be slipped ofi" and a new one quickly substituted and the arm adjusted to the particular length of belt and the adjusting idler adjusted to secure the desired tension. Also, it is common for belts of this type to stretch, particularly at the beginning of use, and adjustments may be quickly made to compensate for that.
Polishing machines embodying my invention are very convenient to use and result in a very substantial saving in time of the operator.
My invention may be embodied as an attachment to any polishing or bufiing lathemotor or belt driven.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a very practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain adaptations and modifications which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a polishing machine, the combination with a driving pulley and a support therefor, of a bracket on said support and provided with longitudinal slots and a slideway transversely aligned with one of the slots, an arm slidable in said way and provided with a pulley at its outer end and an intermediate pulley, said pulleys on said arm being aligned with said driving pulley, a clamping bolt for said arm disposed in said slot aligned with said way, said clamping bolt having a hand nut, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys, the pulley at the outer end of said arm being of relatively small diameter to permit slipping of the work to be polished over the end of the arm into operative relation to the polishing belt, and a belt adjusting pulley carried by a spindle adjustably supported in the second slot in said bracket, the spindle being provided with a hand clamping nut at one end and with an adjusting hand piece at the other.
2., In a polishing machine, the combination with a driving pulley and a support therefor, of a bracket on said support and provided with longitudinal slots and a slideway transversely aligned with one of the slots, an arm slidable in said way and provided with a pulley at its outer end and an intermediate pulley, said pulleys on said arm being aligned with said driving pulley, a clamping bolt for said arm disposed in said slot aligned with said way, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys, the pulley at the outer end of said arm being of relatively small diameter to permit slipping of the work to be polished over the end of the arm into operative relation to the polishing belt,oand a belt adjusting pulley carried by a spindle adjustably supported in the second slot in said bracket.
3. In a polishing machine, the combination with a drive pulley and a support therefor, of a bracket mounted on said support and provided with longitudinal slots and a slideway aligned with one of the slots, an arm slidable in said way and provided with a pulley at its outer end, a clamping bolt for said arm disposed in said slot aligned withsaid way, said clamping bolt having a hand nut, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys, and a belt adjusting pulley carried by a spindle adjustably supported in the second slot in said bracket, the spindle being provided with a clamping nut at one end and with an adjusting hand piece at the other.
4. In a polishing machine, the combination with a drive pulley and a support therefor, of a bracket mounted on said support and provided with longitudinal slots and a slideway aligned withone of the slots, an arm slidable in said Way and provided with a pulley atits outer end, 2.
clamping bolt for said arm disposed in said slot aligned with said way, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys, and a belt adjusting pulley carried by a spindle adjustably supported in the second slot in said bracket.
5. In a polishing machine, the combination of a driving pulley and a support, a bracket provided with a horizontal slideway and with a slot parallel therewith, an arm mounted in said slideway, means for clamping said arm in its adjusted position, a pulley of small diameter mounted on the outer end of said arm, an intermediate band supporting pulley mounted on said arm in spaced relation to said pulley at the outer end of said arm, an adjustable guide and band tensioning pulley mounted on said support for adjustment in a plane parallel to the plane adjustment of said arm, the several pulleys being grooved, and a polishing band coacting with said pulleys, said guide pulley being adapted to support the under reach of said band in engagement with the under side of said intermediate pulley.
6. In a polishing machine, the combination or a driving pulley and a support, a bracket provided with a horizontal slideway and with a slot parallel therewith, an arm mounted in said slideway, means for clamping said arm in its adjusted position, a pulley mounted on the outer end of said arm, an adjustable guide and band tensioning pulley mounted on said support for adjustment in a plane parallel to the plane of adjustment of said arm, and a polishing band coacting with said pulleys.
7. In a polishing machine, the combination, with a driving pulley and a support therefor, of a bracket on said support, an arm mounted on said bracket for longitudinal adjustment and: provided with a pulley at its outer end andan intermediate pulley, said pulleys on said arm being aligned with said driving pulley, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys, the pulley at the outer end of said arm being of relatively small diameter to permit slipping of the work to be polished over the end of the arm into operative relation to the polishing belt, and a belt adjusting pulley adjustably supported on said bracket.
8. In a polishing machine, the combination with a driving pulley and a support therefor, 01 a bracket on said support, an arm mounted on said bracket for adjustment in the direction of the length of the arm and provided with abelt pulley at its outer end, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys and extending longitudinally of the arm, said belt pulley supporting thebelt at its outermost point relative to the arm, and a belt adjusting pulley supported on said bracket, said belt. adjusting pulley being adjustable longitudinally and parallel to the direction of adjustment of the arm.
9. In a polishing machine, the combination of a driving pulley and a support, an arm mounted on said support for longitudinal adjustment, a pulley of small diameter mounted on the outer end of said arm, an intermediate band supporting pulley mounted on said arm in spaced relation to said pulley at the outer end of said arm, an adjustable guide and band tensioning pulley mounted on said support, the several pulleys being grooved, and a polishing band coacting with said pulleys, said guide pulley being adapted to supportv the under reach of said band in engagement with the under side of said intermediate pulley.
10. In a polishing machine, the combination. 11y
of a driving pulley and a support, an arm mounted on said support for longitudinal adjustment, a pulley of small diameter mounted on the outer end of said arm, an intermediate band supporting pulley mounted on said arm in spaced relation to said pulley at the outer end of said arm, an adjustable guide and band tensioning pulley mounted on said support, and a polishing band coacting with said pulleys.
11. In a polishing machine, the combination With a driving pulley and a support, of an arm mounted on said support for longitudinal adjustment and provided with a pulley at its outer end and an intermediate pulley, said pulleys on said arm being aligned with said driving pulley, a polishing belt arranged on said pulleys, the pulley at the outer end of said arm being of relatively small diameter to permit slipping of the work to be polished over the end of the arm into operative relation to the polishing belt.
12. In a polishing machine, the combination with a driving pulley and a support, of an arm mounted for longitudinal adjustment, said arm being forked at its outer end and having a vertical opening in spaced relation to its outer end, pulleys mounted on the forked end of said arm and in said opening thereof, said pulleys being aligned with said driving pulley, the pulley at the outer end of the arm being of relatively small diameter, a polishing band on said pulleys, and a band adjusting idler interposed between the intermediate band pulley and the driving pulley to ooact with the bottom reach of the polishing band.
13. In a polishing machine, the combination with a driving pulley and a support, of an arm mounted for longitudinal adjustment, said arm being forked at its outer end and having a vertical opening in spaced relation to its outer end, pulleys mounted on the forked end of said arm and in said opening thereof, said pulleys being aligned with said driving pulley, the pulley at the outer end of the arm being of relatively small diameter, and a polishing band on said pulleys.
