A flat two-bed knitting machine having double locks comprises means for transferring stitches from at least one of the marginal needles of first one bed and then the opposed bed to an adjacent needle and means for guiding these needles after transfer to a non knitting path at each stroke of the carriage in either direction. As the cam carriage moves from right to left (Fig. 2) needle butts N pass between lead in cams 1 and 2 and are raised by a needle advancing cam 6. At this point transfer means (not shown) push at least one marginal needle N<SP>1</SP> along a path shown by a dotted line A to effect a transfer of loops, the emptied needle then travels along a channel 18 and is acted on by a swinging picker finger 32 and follows a non-knitting path B between cams 21 and 22. In the front bed marginal needles N<SP>1</SP> from which loops have been removed follow paths A<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>1</SP> as described above. The remaining active needles are operated by cams 6, 8 and 11 or 7, 9 and 13 to produce a fresh course of stitches, no knitting having taken place at the leading knitting section of the double locks. Similarly when the locks move from left to right (Fig. 3) the marginal needles have their loops transferred when moving along the path C or C<SP>1</SP> and are taken out of action along the path B or B<SP>1</SP>. To produce a 1 x 1 or 2 x 2 rib the shaded cams 25 and 33 in the front lock are moved to a "half way in" position to operate on long butted needles Nh, cam 25 moving these needles to a position where they transfer their loops to the needles of the rear bed and cam 33 retracting them, after transfer, to a non-knitting position.
