Abstract
1,007,896. Inductors. PYE Ltd. Feb.27, 1962 [March 1, 1961], No. 7464/61. Heading H1T. [Also in Division H3 and H4] The invention relates to tuning an aerial (see Division H4) by means of an adjustable coil or coils 31, 32 within a fibre glass housing 2 and connected in series between a whip aerial element 1 and a further radiating element. In the embodiment shown, a plurality of adjoining ferrite blocks 25 held together by resilient pads 26 are enclosed within that part of the threaded fibre glass tube 24 on which the coil 31 is wound whilst the coil 32 is wound on a part of the threaded tube 24 (or rod) which has a metallized non-magnetic surface 30. The coils 31 and 32 are joined by conductor 29 which passes through nylon nuts 28. Each nut 28 is provided with a projection (not shown) which slides in a longitudinal slot in the wall of the housing 2. As the tube 24 is rotated by drive means 14, turns are removed from one coil and replaced on the other thus changing the resonant frequency of the aerial. In a similar embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) only one coil and one nylon nut are provided, the coil being wound directly on to the fibre glass former. When the former is rotated, to add or subtract turns from the coil and the slack in the coil being taken up by a tensioned roller. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) a fixed coil is formed from part of a copper tape extending between the ends of the housing and embedded therein or formed on the inner wall thereof. This coil is associated with two movable cores, one ferromagnetic and one of conductive paramagnetic or diamagnetic material. The cores are moved by a cable acting against a control spring. In this embodiment the housing is filled with oil and alumina. In each embodiment the tuning may be metered by means of a current transformer (the ferrite core of which is placed around the feeder to the aerial). After rectification this transformer output may be used to give a visual indication on a meter or to drive the means by which the inductance is varied.
