Abstract
D-ribinose is made electrolytically from d-ribonolactone by mixing the latter with an electrolyte containing a mineral acid salt of an amine, and using this as catholyte with a mercury cathode, or an amalgamated metal, e.g. lead, silver, or zinc. The anolyte is an aqueous mineral acid. The amine may be primary, secondary, or tertiary, e.g. the sulphate, nitrate, hydrochloride, or phosphate of methylamine, benzylamine, heptylamine, or of alkylolamines. The catholyte should be maintained at pH 3 to 5 by adding a mineral acid during the reduction which is effected at 10-40 DEG C. The anolyte is preferably a 10% solution of an acid, and is separated from the catholyte by a porous diaphragm, e.g. a cup made of alundum or unglazed porcelain.
