Abstract

1,007,447. Propelling carriers along rails. VICKERS-ARMSTRONG (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Sept. 7, 1961 [Aug. 19, 1960], No. 28840/60. Heading B7L. [Also in Divisions A2 and F4] Means for advancing carriers for foodstuff through a vacuum chamber in which the foodstuff is freeze-dried includes a draw-bar in the chamber, extending from near the inlet to near the outlet, means for reciprocating the drawbar in the direction of its length, and one-way couplings to engage the draw-bar with each of the carriers so that they move with it towards the outlet but not in the opposite direction. As shown, the draw-bar 33 is mounted on carriages 36 bearing rollers 38 that run in the guide rails 39. The ends of the carriages are secured to the piston rods of the hydraulic jacks 41 and 43. There are on the base 14 of each carriage 13 two pawls 32 co-operating with pins 35 on the draw-bar to move the carriages forward with the draw-bar but to allow the carriages to stay when the draw-bar moves backwards.
