Abstract

1,007,421. Hydrodynamic brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1962 [Jan. 24, 1961], No. 2784/61. Headings F2E and F2F. In a hydrodynamic braking device 2 for braking a vehicle, liquid is supplied to the braking device by a positive displacement type pump 3 and the discharge of liquid from the braking device is controlled by valve means 4 adapted to be controlled when the hydraulic pressure line 28 to the road wheel brakes the vehicle such that operation of the vehicle brakes will move valve means 19 downwardly to restrict the flow of fluid from the hydrodynamic braking device to effect retardation of the connection 5 to the transmission shaft of the vehicle. On return of the liquid from the hydrodynamic braking device 2 via the connection 13 the liquid passes through a heat exchanger 29 before passing into a storage tank 1. While the pump 3 may be of the vane-type formed integrally with the casing of the hydrodynamic braking device as shown in Fig. 1, the pump may be mounted separately from the braking device. In an alternative arrangement, water from the cooling system of the vehicle may be used instead of using a separate storage tank for the hydraulic liquid.
