Abstract

Raney and similar metals in powder, or shaped forms containing absorbed hydrogen are freed from it wholly or partly, by treating in an electrolytic cell, where it is immersed in the electrolyte but not in contact with the electrodes. The proportion of the current passing through the metal to remove the hydrogen depends on the shape and metal of the body, and is measured by the ratio of volume of cathode gas evolved to the amount of desorbed gas. This is determined in a preliminary test. The treated body is no longer pyrophoric, and may be re-charged with hydrogen electrolytically. Suitable electrolytes are sodium carbonate or caustic soda, and examples are given of treating Raney cobalt and nickel; immersed in alkali solution at the bottom of a U-tube, platinum electrodes being inserted at the top of each limb. The treatment was effected at 0.2 amps. for 30-300 minutes.
