In a high voltage direct current power transmission system each of two transmission cables 5, 6 is connected to a current converter 2 through an isolating switch 3, 4. The isolating switches are of the change-over type to permit reverse power flow. In operation, the converter is controlled to zero current flow before the switches are operated.
