Hand-irons; steaming and damping apparatus.-Pressing-irons equipped with steam-generating means for damping the fabric are fitted with special valve mechanism for regulating the supply of water to the steam-generator. In the construction shown, the iron is heated by a gas burner 4 supplied through a valved mixing-pipe 9 working on the Bunsen system, but other heating-means may be used. The combustion chamber is in the lower portion of the iron and is provided with side and rear air-holes. The steam chamber 22 in the upper portion of the iron is provided with gills 23 and delivers steam to the fabric through a strainer 20 and passages leading to holes 17 arranged in the toe of the iron, as shown in Fig. 4. The water supply comprises a valved pipe 27 passing through the handle and delivering into a chamber 35 through minute holes in the piston 43. On depressing the press-stud 41 against the action of the spring 44, the valve 46 is opened and the piston 43 acts as a pusher to force the accumulated water into the steam chamber. The pressure of the steam closes a ball valve 50 and prevents steam from passing back into the water-pipe.
