Abstract
A refractory consists of a finely divided refractory oxide filler and a binder which is a eutectic of a refractory oxide and a metal pyrophosphate. The refractory oxide filler may be the same as that of the eutectic and may be alumina, zirconia, beryllia, titania, magnesia, chromia, thoria or hafnia and the pyrophosphate may be that of manganese, titanium, iron, zirconium or nickel. The eutectic may be blended with the filler and the mixture heated under pressure to a temperature of about the melting point of the eutectic. 10-20 weight per cent of NaPO3 may be added to the pyrophosphate to lower the melting point of the eutectic.
