Abstract

1,006,965. Crutch. FAR-PRIT ASSOCIATE Inc. June 4, 1964 [June 4, 1963], No. 23100/64. Heading A5R. A variable length crutch comprises a pair of telescopic sections and an electrically operated hydraulic power system carried by the crutch for lengthening or shortening the crutch so that a person may raise or lower himself. The crutch comprises cylinder 12 with arm pit rest 16 acting as reservoir for hydraulic fluid, piston rod 14 with piston 20 slidable in cylinder 12 and holding means in which is situated an electrically driven motor and pump unit 35 and reverse flow control means 36 e.g. a check valve, connected to reservoir 16 by conduit 44, and to cylinder 12 by conduit 46, the unit 35 and value 36 being controlled by finger tip controls 38 and 40 respectively. Actuation of the pump causes hydraulic fluid to pass into cylinder 12, forcing the piston 20 downwards and once a certain negative pressure, greater than that caused by gravity on the piston 20, is obtained on the pump side of the valve 36, valve 36 opens to allow fluid to pass from reservoir 16 to the pump, so that the piston can be forced down to lengthen the crutch to the required extent. To shorten the crutch, the motor and pump are switched off and valve 36 is opened by control means 40 to allow fluid to pass from cylinder 12 to reservoir 16. Alternatively, the pump may be operated to pump fluid from cylinder 12 to the reservoir 16. A vent 26 prevents accumulation of positive or negative pressures below piston 20. The arm pit rest 16 may be cushioned and the piston rod 14 may be provided with resilient ferrule 28. The crutch may be made of metal.
