Abstract

The invention comprises complexes of formula <FORM:1006880/C2/1> wherein Hal is a halogen atom, R is hydrogen or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or the groups R, in combination with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a piperidine, morpholine or pyrrolidine ring, R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, an aryl group or an alkoxy-substituted aryl group, R3 is hydrogen or a hydroxy or alkoxy group, n is 1, 2 or 3, and X is oxygen or a direct link, and their preparation by reaction of a cerous halide with the appropriate chromonamine hydrohalide or with the appropriate chromonamine in the presence of a hydrohalic acid. The cerous halide used may be prepared in situ by dissolving cerous carbonate, cerous oxide or a cerite ore in a hydrohalic acid. The compounds of the invention may be used to increase the oxygen supply to tissues, organs or blood, and may for example be inhaled as aerosols.
