In a telescopic umbrella having telescoping ribs 24, 25, a main slider 28 connected to the rib parts 25 by main struts 27, and an auxilliary slider 30 connected to the main struts by auxiliary struts 31, a helical control edge formed by the lower edge of a slot 50 in the auxiliary slider engages a spring-urged stop 51 on the stick, at initial splaying of the ribs, to rotate the auxiliary slider and jam the ribs to prevent telescoping thereof. In a modification the slot 50 is replaced by an openended groove in the inner surface of the auxiliary slider. The bottom edge of the auxiliary slider is bell-mouthed and presses the stop inwards when the umbrella canopy is collapsed. As shown in Fig. 4 the stop 51 also passes through apertures 57 in the stick parts 20, 21 to lock them in extended position, the stop being mounted on the free arm 54 of a leaf spring 55 mounted in the stick part 21 at 56 and released by a bar 58 connected to a knob 60 on the handle 22. In a further modification a stop causing rotation of the auxiliary slider and a separate locking stop for the extended stick parts are mounted at the ends of a U-spring and a release fork, having arms actuating respective ends of the spring, is connected to the knob 60.
