Abstract

An antifungal substance radicicolin having an optical rotation <FORM:1006724/C2/1> - 193.5 DEG at a concentration of 1.4g. in 100g. methanol and yielding on acid hydrolysis amino acids with Rf values 0.3, 0.4, 0.54, and 0.7 in a paper chromatographic system comprising n-butanol (120 parts by volume) acetic acid (30 parts by volume) and water (50 parts by volume), the amino acids being identified as DL-alamine, L-a -amino-n-butyric acid, L-valine and L-N-methyl-leucine respectively, may be prepared by a process comprising the cultivation of Cylindrocarpon radicicola Wollenweber in an aqueous nutrient medium containing assimilable carbon and nitrogen under aerobic conditions until the culture has developed substantial antifungal activity, and then recovering radicicolin from the culture by solvent extraction, the radicicolin being isolated from the extract or extracts by adsorption or partition chromatography, liquid-liquid phase separation or precipitation. Pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of a fungal infection comprise radicicolin together with a carrier therefor in forms such as a powder, a solution or suspension in non-aqueous or emulsified liquid, or a spray.
