Abstract

1,006,721. Plastics barrels. H. HECKEN, and A. URBAN. Sept. 25, 1961 [Sept. 23, 1960], No. 34280/61. Heading B8D. [Also in Division B5] Barrels are made by applying a low pressure synthetic resin to the surfaces of an outer mould member and an inner flexible mould member such as a pressure bag, these surfaces being preferably penetrated with release agent, allowing the resin to gel, coating the pregelled layers with a second low-pressure resin, applying a layer of glass fibres, such as a mixture of glass mat and rovings, between the mould members, and pressings, as by inflating the bag, at normal or elevated temperature. The outer mould member has a removable cover. Integrally formed rims and circumferential protuberances facilitating rolling may be covered by rubber rings. The resins employable are polyesters and copolymers thereof, epoxy resins, polyurethanes and silicones, together with peroxides, cobalt naphthenate, amines, anhydrides and fillers, e.g. silica as additives. In an example compositions comprising polyester monomer and polymer mixtures were used containing respectively (a) silica, benzoyl peroxide and cobalt naphthenate, and (b) cobalt naphthenate only. The inner layer of the container however may be a silicone resin.
