Abstract

1,006,638. Excavator. C. J. DAVIS. Sept. 30, 1963 [Dec. 24, 1962], No. 38481/63. Heading E1F. An excavator comprises a mobile chassis 11 supporting a body 15 tiltable about a horizontal axis 22 relative to the chassis (Fig. 5) and swingable about a vertical axis 35 (Fig. 3), the body having a boom 18 mounted at one end and independently swingable about a vertical axis 70, spaced from axis 35. This arrangement permits digging trenches adjacent to walls, as shown, body 15 being set in one position while boom 18 is operated to perform the digging operation. Fig. 2 shows how an intermediate frame 16 is mounted on the chassis 11 by pivot pins and bearings 22, 29 for lateral pivoting by hydraulic double-acting cylinders 32, 33. Body 15 is mounted on frame 16, rollers 36 and 58 engaging channels 53, 54, 55 and 39 respectively to stabilise, for rotation about pivot 35 by cylinders 59. Boom 18, carrying bucket or shovel 62 and various operating cylinders (Fig. 1, not shown) is mounted for vertical swinging on bracket 75, which is rotated about a vertical pin 70 by a rotary vane hydraulic motor. Body 15 houses a power unit which drives a hydraulic pump to power the various cylinders and a hydraulic motor 13 driving the tracks 12 independently. Each pair of cylinders 32, 33 and 59 is connected to a valve which simultaneously extends one and contracts the other cylinder of a pair.
