(Cl. 214-138) This invention relates to trenchers or backhoes and has particular reference to a new and improved dipper stick construction for apparatus of the type set forth.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth which is hydraulically actuated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth wherein the hydraulic actuating means for adjusting the bucket supporting portion of the dipper stick relative to its support is inside of said bucket supporting portion, and is so positioned inside the dipper stick or bucket support as to prevent damage during use of the apparatus.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth wherein the dipper stick or bucket support and support therefor have comating surfaces of such configuration as to maintain a set position or relationship therebetween.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth which can be adapted for trenching or loading.
Another object is to provide a device of the type set forth wherein the bucket can be drawn or moved up close to the pivot connection between the boom and dipper stick.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth wherein the pivot connections of the socket member to the boom and of the socket member to the hydraulic means are in the same plane.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth wherein the pivot connections of the bucket to the bucket supporting stick and of the bucket linkage to the bucket supporting stick are in the same plane.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth wherein the pivot point of the bucket, the pivot point of the link pivotally connected to the supporting stick and the bucket pivoting ram, and the pivot point for the cylinder for actuating the bucket are in the same plane.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, as the preferred form of the invention has been given by way of illustration only.

3,140,000 Patented July 7,, 1964 Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout, the invention relates particularly to an apparatus adaptable for use in loading or as a trencher or backhoe which includes a boom carrying a bucket-carrying dipper stick or bucket support.
In this device, the apparatus is shown mounted on a tractor, the hydraulic system of which provides hydraulic power for the apparatus. The tractor shown is of the track type and includes the engine 10, tracks 11 and operators seat 12.
The boom 13 is pivotally connected at 14 to support 15 which, in turn, is pivotally connected at 16 to platform support 17 which is detachably connected to the tractor.
The boom 13 is adapted to be raised and lowered by hydraulic jack 21 connected adjacent its opposite ends at 22 and 23 to boom 13 and support 15, respectively.
Adjacent the free end of said boom 13 is pivotally connected the dipper stick 19, said dipper stick 19 being connected intermediate its ends to said boom 13.
Said dipper stick 19 comprises a socket member 19A pivotally connected at 20 to the boom 13, said socket member 19A including a longitudinal socket or slot 39 in its outer face and having an angular supporting portion or section 19B as is shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings. Hydraulic means 27 for pivoting said socket member 19A relative to the boom 13 is pivotally connected to said socket member 19A at 26; and the pivot connections 20 and 26, respectively, of said socket member 19A to said boom 13 and of said socket member 19A to said hydraulic means 27 are, preferably, parallel to each other and perpendicular to the vertical or socket axis and in the same plane.
A slidable or telescopic bucket-supporting stick 24 is slidably mounted in mating relation with said socket member 19A in said socket or slot 39 such that said socket member 19A and said bucket-supporting stick 24 have comating angular coextensive portions. Said coextensive portions serve to prevent turning movement of the bucketsupporting stick 24.
Said bucket-supporting stick 24 is pivotally connected at 32 to the bucket 25a, said connection being made adjacent the end of said bucket-supporting stick 24 opposite the end thereof in the socket member 19A. 'Said bucketsupporting stick 24, further, carries hydraulic means 29, which hydraulic means 29 effect rotation of the bucket 25a relative to said bucket-supporting stick 24.
Said hydraulic means 29 comprise the support 36, the
bucket-rotating cylinder 29a pivotally connected at 36a to said support 36, and the ram .37 which is operatively connected to said cylinder 29a. Said ram 37 is pivotally connected at 38 to the link 35, which link35 is pivotally connected at 35a to the bucket 25a, .and to the second link 31, which link 31 is pivotally connected at one end to the bucket-supporting stick 24 and at its opposite end to ram 37 or the link 35. The pivot connections 31a and 32, respectively, of said bucket-supporting stick 24 are, preferably, parallel to each other and perpendicular to the bucket supporting stick and in the same plane. The pivot points 31a, 32 and 36a are located in the same plane.
The hydraulic jack 33 has its cylinder connected at 33A to socket member 19A and its ram connected at 33B to bucket-supporting stick 24. Hydraulic jack 33is adapted to move said bucket-supporting stick 24 axially in said "Said. slot 39 maybe extended to either one or both of the ends of said socket member 19A to allow assembly of bucket-supporting stick and bucketrotating cylinder support.
The operation of the device is believed to be apparent from the foregoing description.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided new and improved means for accomplishing all of the objects and advantages of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof and a member closing said slot after the assembly of said support for said bucket rotating cylinder.
2. In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, the pivot connections of said socket member to said boom and of said socket member to said hydraulic means being parallel to each other and perpendicular to the socket axis and in the same plane, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof and a member closing said slot after the assembly of said support for said bucket rotating cylinder.
3. In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, the pivot connections of said second link to said bucket supporting stick and of said bucket to said bucket supporting stick being parallel to each other and perpendicular to the bucket supporting stick and in the same plane, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof and a member closing said slot after the assembly of said support for said bucket rotating cylinder.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, the pivot connections of said socket member to said boom and of said socket member to said hydraulic means being parallel to each other and perpendicular to the vertical or socket axis and in the same plane, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, the pivot connections of said second link to said bucket supporting stick and of said bucket to said bucket supporting stick being parallel to each other and perpendicular to the bucket supporting stick and in the same plane, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof and a member closing said slot after the assembly of said support for said bucket rotating cylinder.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof and a member closing said slot after the assembly of said support for said bucket rotating cylinder and the pivot point of said bucket, the pivot point of the link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick and the bucket pivoting ram, and the pivot point for the cylinder for actuating the bucket being in the same plane.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder and to said bucket, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof, which longitudinal slot extends to at least one of the ends of said socket member for allowing assembly of said bucket supporting stick and said bucket rotating cylinder support.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, the pivot connections of said socket member to said boom and of said socket member to said hydraulic means being parallel to each other and perpendicular to the vertical or socket axis and in the same plane, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder and to said bucket, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof, which longitudinal slot extends to at least one of the ends of said socket member for allowing assembly of said bucket supporting stick and said bucket rotating cylinder support.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to eifect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder and to said bucket, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof, which longitudinal slot extends to at least one of the ends of said socket member for allowing assembly of said bucket supporting stick and said bucket rotating cylinder support.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof and a member closing said slot after the assembly of said support for said bucket rotating cylinder.

In a device of the character described, a boom, a dipper stick pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said boom, said dipper stick comprising a socket member pivotally connected to said boom, hydraulic means pivotally connected to said socket member for pivoting said member relative to said boom, said socket member having an angular supporting section, a slidable bucket supporting stick slidably mounted in said socket member, said socket member and bucket supporting stick having comating angular coextensive portions to prevent turning movement of said bucket supporting stick, said bucket supporting stick having a bucket pivotally connected thereto adjacent the end opposite the end in said socket member, hydraulic means carried by said bucket supporting stick to effect rotation of said bucket relative to said bucket supporting stick, said hydraulic means comprising a support and a cylinder pivotally connected to said support, a ram operatively connected to said cylinder, a link pivotally connected to said bucket and said ram adjacent its opposite ends, and a second link pivotally connected to said bucket supporting stick, said socket member having a longitudinal slot in one face thereof.

1. IN A DEVICE OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED, A BOOM, A DIPPER STICK PIVOTALLY CONNECTED INTERMEDIATE ITS ENDS TO SAID BOOM, SAID DIPPER STICK COMPRISING A SOCKET MEMBER PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID BOOM, HYDRAULIC MEANS PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID SOCKET MEMBER FOR PIVOTING SAID MEMBER RELATIVE TO SAID BOOM, SAID SOCKET MEMBER HAVING AN ANGULAR SUPPORTING SECTION, A SLIDABLE BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK SLIDABLY MOUNTED IN SAID SOCKET MEMBER, SAID SOCKET MEMBER AND BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK HAVING COMATING ANGULAR COEXTENSIVE PORTIONS TO PREVENT TURNING MOVEMENT OF SAID BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK, SAID BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK HAVING A BUCKET PIVOTALLY CONNECTED THERETO ADJACENT THE END OPPOSITE THE END IN SAID SOCKET MEMBER, HYDRAULIC MEANS CARRIED BY SAID BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK TO EFFECT ROTATION OF SAID BUCKET RELATIVE TO SAID BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK, SAID HYDRAULIC MEANS COMPRISING A SUPPORT AND A CYLINDER PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID SUPPORT, A RAM OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO SAID CYLINDER, A LINK PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID BUCKET AND SAID RAM ADJACENT ITS OPPOSITE ENDS, AND A SECOND LINK PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID BUCKET SUPPORTING STICK, SAID SOCKET MEMBER HAVING A LONGITUDINAL SLOT IN ONE FACE THEREOF AND A MEMBER CLOSING SAID SLOT AFTER THE ASSEMBLY OF SAID SUPPORT FOR SAID BUCKET ROTATING CYLINDER.
