Abstract

Wood fibreboard having a thickness of at least 1/4 inch and a density of 10 to 75 lb/ft3 is made by digesting hardwood chips under pressure up to 300 lb/in2 in caustic alkali solution at a temperature of 70 to 200 DEG F. for a time of 1/4 to 2 hours, separating the chips from the digestion liquor, refining the chips to a fibrous mass having a TAPPI drainage time of 10 to 60 seconds, forming an aqueous furnish of these fibres, applying this furnish to a foraminous support and partially deviating it to form a web, and drying the web. An insulating board of density 10 to 35 lb/ft3 is obtained without hot-pressing, or a hardboard of 35 to 75 lb/ft3 by accomplishing at least part of the drying in a hot press. The black liquor from the digestion step can be fortified with 50% caustic soda solution and reused. The furnish may also include other fibres, e.g. of ground wood, may have its pH adjusted with sulphuric acid or alum and may contain a petroleum wax emulsion, or asphalt emulsion or pigments. Fibreboard according to the present invention can be united with a board of ground-wood fibres by pressing the two together.
