Abstract

1,005,939. Steering columns. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 3, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1963], No. 36089/64. Heading B7H. A steering shaft of a motor vehicle comprises a shaft 36 connected by a universal joint 38 to a stub shaft 40 to which the steering wheel 18 is fixed and which is mounted by bearings in a support member 30 which is pivotally connected to the main part 14 of the steering column, a skirt 30 being provided to hide the lower part of the member 30. The column 14 and shaft 36 are horizontally disposed and any position of angular adjustment, between limit stops, of the shaft 40 and member 30 may be obtained by actuating a reversible electric motor 44 from a switch on the dashboard, the motor driving through gearing 46, 48, 50, 52 a nut 56 attached to the gear 52 and prevented from axial movement and engaging a screw 58, an extension 60 of which is pivotally connected at 62 to the member 30. The screw 58 and nut 56 hold the upper part of the column in the adjusted position.
