Abstract

947,624. Motor vehicle steering gear. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. Dec. 6, 1962 [Dec. 9, 1961], No. 44141/61. Heading B7H. A steering wheel is mounted in a vehicle in a manner which retains it in position axially of the steering shaft under normal conditions but permits it to move axially under an abnormal load, e.g. due to an accident, the steering shaft being made telescopic for this purpose, comprising a solid shaft 3 of circular crosssection having an enlarged portion 4 of square cross-section whose each face is convex, and a tubular shaft 1 of square cross-section connected at its lower end to a forging splined and bolted to the steering mechanism. A resilient sleeve 5 envelopes the enlarged portion 4 and the tubular part 1 is crimped at 6 to prevent their separation during assembly.
