Abstract

<PICT:1005251/C6-C7/1> Welds joining iron or steel pipes to an elbow or bend connecting them are stress-relieved by applying a layer of exothermic composition only to the region of the welds, and enclosing the welds and the elbow or bend in a box-like structure of heat-insulating material which is spaced from them by an air gap. As shown in Fig. 1, pipes 1 and 2 are welded at 4 and 5 to bend 3, exothermic composition 6 being applied to the weld area. The whole of the exothermic material and the bend are enclosed in housing 7 built up of heat-insulating slabs, which may consist of asbestos compositions, furnace aggregate, grog or sand.
