Abstract

An expandable composition comprises poly styrene, a volatile hydrocarbon, a quantity not exceeding 1% by weight of a nitrogenliberating, organic compound decomposing between 100 DEG and 200 DEG C., and an oxide or hydroxide of a metal of Group II or III of the Periodic System. Suitable organic nitrogen compounds are azodicarbonamide, azodiisobutyronitrile, benzene sulphohydrazide, benzene m-disulphohydrazide, diphenyl sulphone-3,31-disulphohydrazide, 4,41-oxybis-benzene sulphohydrazide, dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine, N,N1-dimethyl - N,N1 - dinitrosoterephthalic amide, N,N1 - diethyl - N,N1 - dinitrosoterephthalic amide, N,N1 - dimethyl - N,N1 - dinitrosophthalic amide, and N,N1-ethylene-dibenzamide. Preferred metal oxides or hydroxides are those of zinc, magnesium and aluminium with calcium oxide especially preferred, these compounds being used in quantities up to 1% by weight, and usually 0.1-0.6%. Specified hydrocarbons include butane, pentane, neopentane, hexane, cyclohexane and petroleum ether, used in quantities of 5-6% by weight. The composition may be extruded as a tube and blown up to between 3 and 10 times its original diameter while being stretched simultaneously in the longitudinal direction. Specification 783,034 is referred to.
