Abstract

1,004,853. Variable-speed gear; clutches. AUTO TRANSMISSION Ltd. Dec. 29, 1961 [Jan. 3, 1961], Nos. 192/61 and 5211/61. Headings F2C and F2D. An overdrive gear for a vehicle transmission comprises an input carrier 3 having planet pinions meshing an output ring gear 8 and a reaction sun gear 6, and the gear teeth may be helically cut. The sun gear can be clutched to the ring gear by coned friction surfaces on discs 10, 12 gripping an extension 23 of the ring gear between them, or the sun can be braked by applying hydraulic pressure to a cylinder 35 to actuate an annular piston 34 non-rotatably mounted in the gearing housing and having a friction surface engageable with an external conical surface 45 of the disc 10. As shown the discs 10, 12 are splined to a sleeve 7 on which the sun 6 is formed, the disc 12 being formed with an integral internally splined sleeve 16, and the disc 10 being formed with a sleeve 19 having tongues 22 projecting through slots 20 in the sleeve 16 into engagement with straight splines 21 on the sleeve 7. The plates 10, 12 are urged together by springs 26 reacting between the disc 10 and a spring carrier 27 fast with the sleeve 16 of disc 12. When hydraulic pressure is applied to cylinder 35, the piston 34 engages the disc 10 and moves it axially to release the extension 23, and at the same time the levers 38 are pivoted about pins 39 and their inner ends move the spring carrier 27 and hence disc 12 rightwards to release the extension 23. The engaging pressure of the clutch varies with the torque transmitted due to the helical teeth of the epicyclic gearing, the sleeve 7 sliding axially and acting through spring sleeves 48 or 18 to increase the engaging pressure of disc 10 or 12 according to the direction of torque transmission. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the sun gear has straight teeth, and the sleeve 7 has helical splines 21 engaging the friction disc 10 only so that the engaging pressure is torque responsive. In another modification the sleeve 7 is unsplined and has a radial peg projecting into a V-shaped slot in the sleeve 19 of disc 10 so that an additional engaging pressure is applied to the disc 10 irrespective of the direction of torque transmission.
