Abstract

1,004,799. Spray moulding. DE VILBISS CO. Oct. 9, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 39719/63. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B2] A method of spraying a fibre-resin mixture on to a mould or other working surface comprises conveying chaffed fibres, e.g. glass fibres, through a conduit by a stream of pressurized air, forcing the fibres to the centre of the tube, dissipating the excess air to slow the fibre stream, and spraying the stream along with a stream of resin on to the working surface. In the embodiment shown, continuous strands 11 are cut into short lengths by a rotating cutter 16, and blown through a conduit 26, 24 by a blower 15. A conical collar 35 having a rearwardly facing annular opening 38 is connected by fins 36 between the end nipple 37 of the conduit 24 and a nozzle member 39. The stream of fibres is forced to the centre of the conduit by suitable members, e.g. fingers 40, then passes through the collar, the excess air being dissipated rearwardly through opening 38, and is finally discharged through nozzle 39 at a reduced velocity. Fingers 41 prevent the formation of any fibrous clumps. The issuing stream is fanned, by air from openings 42, into a flat-beam and is mixed with a similarly shaped stream of resin from a spray gun 50 located adjacent the nozzle as in Fig. 1, the mixed streams being directed on to the working surface. Specifications 796,684 and 910,510 are referred to.
