A predominately series wound compound D.C. motor 1 drives a battery-electric vehide 10, such as a fork lift truck, through a hydrostatic transmission comprising a variable displacement pump 3 and hydraulic motor 4. A centrifugal governor 8 limits the maximum speed of the motor on the overrun when it acts as a generator by switching an additional shunt winding into the motor circuit and so providing an increased braking effect.
