Abstract

Ball-shaped water-swellable grains of a high molecular weight hydrophilic copolymer of an alkylidene bis-acrylamide, having the formula <FORM:1004669/C3/1> wherein R1 and R2 each represent methyl or hydrogen, together with an ethylenically unsaturated compound are obtained by mixing a solution of the two monomers with a liquid capable of forming a two-phase system with the solution, agitating the system so as to distribute the solution as droplets within the liquid, and polymerizing until cross-linking and gelation of the drops is attained. The preferred monomer is acrylamide. The usual catalysts are used. The two phase system is generally water (solvent) together with halogenated or non-halogenated aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Dispersion stabilizers may be used, these are generally water-soluble polymers. Specification 865,265 is referred to.
