[Also in Division B3] A centrifugal pump impeller having an axial inlet communicating with a number of equispaced arcuate fluid flow passages includes two companion members joined together by welding, one member 10, Fig. 1, being in the form of a back plate having a number of arcuate ribs 13 defining a "catherine wheel like" formation of the flow passages, and the other member 16, Fig. 3, being in the form of a ring having a number of arcuate openings 18 complementary in number and formation to the ribs 13. The members 16 and 10 are castings, the member 10 having a number of radial strengthening ribs on its rear face. The arcuate openings 18 are of V cross-section tapering to a narrow width at the back of the member 16. On assembly the member 16 is positioned on the tops of the ribs 13 of the member 10 with tongues 15 locating the openings 18 and with a boss 14, forming the impeller inlet, locating a bore 17. Weld metal is then applied, as by the shielded arc process, to the openings 18 and between the boss 14 and bore 17. Finally, the composite body is machined to remove surplus weld metal and is reduced in diameter to expose the outer ends of ribs 13. Prior to assembly the members 10, 16 may be fettled, shot blasted, polished or otherwise coated with metal or other material to produce a smooth finish and prolong the life of the impeller.
