Abstract

1,003,896. Packaging-machines. M. R. FRAZIER. Aug. 23, 1963 [May 16, 1963], No. 33502/63. Heading B8C. Cartons are transferred by a suction member G from a magazine D and set up each in a holder F carried by a pair of endless chains E, which carry the cartons past base-closing members H, filling members J, closure members K and gluing members to a removal member 239. A spring-loaded follower 63 urges the stacked cartons towards the member G which is cam-operated to pivot about a pin 119, Fig. 11, vacuum being applied to a cup 112 through intermediate passages from a pump 153. A rotary air valve 150 interrupts the air flow to release the carton when the arm 110 of the member G has passed between the pair of chains E and the carton is positioned in the holder F. As the carton is carried forward its flaps 180, 181 are pressed back by a bar 166, Fig. 13. A bottom bar 173 raises a lower flap 182, and a second lower flap 186 is lifted by a bevel arm 190 of a rotary member 195. A striker arm 194 then raises the lower flap tongue 195. A guide rail 197 holds the tongue 195 as the carton is advanced to a shoe 205 which has inclined surfaces for tucking in the tongue 195. The carton is advanced to the filler J rotating about a shaft 84. The top carton flaps are closed by members K, identical with the members H but inverted. After passing through the gluing assembly L, a cam-operated arm 239 ejects the closed cartons from the holders F.
