Abstract

1,003,805. Pulse radar. COMPAGNIE I.B.M. FRANCE. May 9, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 17927/62. Heading H4D. Apparatus for storing cyclically presented items of information comprises a variablethreshold input circuit 61 the threshold of which is controlled in a given cycle in accordance with the number of items of information presented in the previous cycle. The embodiment relates to a pulse radar, the cycle being one aerial scan period. Circuit 61 generates a signal when the input echo pulse amplitude rises above its threshold thereby effecting storage in a memory device of a word indicating the target range and azimuth. The memory device has an optimum operating level of 48 word positions; at the end of a cycle the setting of a counter in unit 64 is modified by switches NH2, NH1, NB1, NB2- corresponding respectively to 66, 56, 40 and 30 words-as follows: (a) if N words have been stored during the preceding cycle and NB1< N<NH1 the setting of the counter remains unaltered, (b) if NB2<N#NB1 one unit is subtracted from the counter, (c) if N<NB2 eight units are subtracted from the counter, (d) if NH1<N<NH2 one unit is added to the counter, and (e) if N>NH2 eight units are added to the counter. The counter output is converted by a resistance network, Fig. 3 (not shown), into an analogue voltage which is utilized as the threshold of circuit 61. A schematic arrangement is given for a typical switch, NH1, Fig. 2 (not shown), which incorporates a scale-of-six counter and a binary counter.
