Abstract

1,100,157. Pulse radar. SOCIETE NOUVELLE D'ELECTRONIQUE ET DE LA RADIO-INDUSTRIE. 11 June, 1965 [16 June, 1964], No. 24889/65. Heading H4D. In an arrangement for deciding whether a pulse radar echo signal in a range-time quantum Q is in a clutter zone, the video echo train is amplitude-quantized in a binary manner, the ensuing " 1 " signals are quantized in duration and time-position, the signals thus quantized are stored, and the quantized " 1 " signals from n time quanta preceding quantum Q in a current pulse repetition period (p.r.p.) are utilized together with similar signals in n time quanta following quantum Q in the previous p.r.p. are utilized to make the decision. The signal in quantum Q itself may also be used. In a store 12 each ferrite toroid corresponds to a time quantum; writing-in and reading-out from the store are controlled by an addressing circuit 13 actuated by pulses. Read-out is as described in Specification 1,071,692 such as to feed into a shift register 16 the signals from the " previous " p.r.p. Another shift register 17 is fed directly from the duration and time-position quantizer 10. Parallel read-out from the shift registers enables a logic unit 18 to totalize the " 1 " data in 2n time quanta and this total is compared with a predetermined threshold; if exceeded, and if the further criterion that there is a " 1 " signal in one of the two time quanta adjacent to quantum. Q is met, the input video signal is blocked from the utilization circuit or the latter is fed from a logarithmic receiver. The P.P.I. may be marked to indicate the clutter zones, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the logic unit decision may be cancelled manually over selectable zones. A decision may be taken as regards azimuth: the clutter zone positions found during an aerial revolution are stored and the clutter sector positions are maintained even if during the next aerial revolution a clutter decision does not arise in a p.r.p. in a particular direction. The invention is stated to be particularly useful when echo amplitude may vary from one p.r.p. to the next as in a radar utilizing random carrier frequencies.
