Abstract
The invention comprises antibiotics of formula <FORM:1003092/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R1 is a methoxy or amino group and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and their preparation by catalytic hydrogenation in a polar solvent of a compound of formula <FORM:1003092/C2/2> or its methyl ether or in the presence of a catalyst comprising gold or a metal of Periods 5 and 6 of Group VIII of the Periodic Table or an oxide thereof until 1 mole of hydrogen is absorbed and reoxidizing the product, and, if desired, reacting the compound obtained with liquid ammonia. Certain of the products are designated anhydro apo mitomycin A (R = -CH3, R1 = -OCH3, R2 = -H), anhydro apo mitimycin B (R = -CH3, R1 = -OCH3, R2 = -CH3), and anhydro apo porfiromycin (R = -CH3, R1 = -NH2, R2 = -CH3).
