Abstract

An ohmic resistance material comprises a metal-glass mixture of 84-50% by weight of glass and 16-50% by weight of inidium alloyed with at least one of the metals gold, palladium and silver. The metal glass mixture is fired to a ceramic base (alumina, steatite, fasterite, zircon porcelains) and may be in the form of an arcuate or rectilinear track. The resistance material is prepared by mixing very small glass particles with a solution of resinates of the required metal proportions, heating to 700 DEG F. to remove volatiles and organic materials and to decompose the metal compound. The resulting material is ground to a fine powder and calcined at 850 DEG F. The resulting calcine is ground to a fine powder and results in a fine powder of glass particles, each coated with extremely small particles of metal. This powder is applied to the base material and fired to produce a continuous phase of solidified glass. The glass may be made by dry mixing a batch of the raw materials, melting in a ceramic crucible to give a clear fluid glass, and pouring it into cold water. The resulting shattered glass is dried and ground to a fine powder.
