Abstract

A metal-glass resistance material is fired on to an insulating base to form a resistance layer having a low temperature coefficient of resistivity, the material comprising a finely divided mixture of 60-99% by weight of glass, the balance being ruthenium or ruthenium alloyed with gold, palladium or platinum, or combinations thereof. For elements using only glass and ruthenium, the latter forms 1-10% b/w. The minimum ruthenium content when alloyed is 2% b/w. of the alloy. The resistance material is prepared by mixing resinates of the metals with very small glass particles to wet them, heating to 700 DEG F. to remove volatiles and organic materials, and to decompose the metal compounds, grinding the resulting dry material, and calcining at 850 DEG F. Further grinding results in a fine powder of small glass particles each coated with an extremely thin layer of metal. The powder is mixed with a liquid carrier, applied to the base and fired. The base may be steatite, alumina, fastenite or a zircon porcelain. Examples of the glasses used are (figs. in %): ....(1).(2).(3) .PbO...65.68.58.10.75.15 .ZnO...5.41.5.41.5.40 .MgO...-.0.39.- .B2O3...10.00.11.30.9.04 .SiO2...16.51.24.50.13.41 .ZrO2...2.40.1.20.- The glass may be made by thoroughly dry mixing a batch of raw materials, melting in a ceramic crucible to give a clear fluid glass, and pouring the glass into cold water. The resulting shattered glass is dried and ground to a fine powder.
