Abstract
1,002,536. Storing liquefied gases. COUCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Jan. 15, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1533/61. Heading F4P. A method of externally-insulating a tank 10 for storing liquefied gas comprises fixing to the tank wall by temporary means, e.g. impact adhesive, and while the tank is at ambient temperature, blocks 11 of insulating material, e.g. polyurethane foam, the interstices of which are filled with freon gas, spaced at calculated distances from one another, filling the tank with the liquefied gas to bring the tank to its working temperature, and permanently securing the blocks in position, e.g. by bands encircling the tank, the calculated distances being such that upon thermal contraction of the tank when the latter's temperature is lowered to the working temperature, the gaps between the blocks close until the blocks are in contact with one another. The tank may be disposed in a vessel and before the insulation work begins the space surrounding the tank is sealed and the ambient temperature within the space is stabilized. The blocks 11 are preferably set with temporary spacers 12, e.g. of wood, and the spacing may be such that a bearing pressure will exist between adjacent blocks when the tank is at its working temperature. The bands encircling the tank preferably bear on the blocks through perforated-sheet metal spreaders; a vapour seal may be incorporated. The co-operating end faces of the blocks may be stepped or the blocks may be in two layers with the gaps between the blocks in one layer being staggered from the gaps in the other layer.
