Abstract

Saturated alcohols are continuously produced by the hydrogenation in liquid phase of olefinically unsaturated aldehydes having 6-13 carbon atoms by passing an aldehyde-containing feed through a plurality of multi-tube sprinkler type reactors in series, contacting the feed in each reactor with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst in a fixed bed, recycling a portion of the product of each reactor to that reactor and recovering a substantially completely hydrogenated product. Preferably the process is carried out at a temperature in the range 110-160 DEG C., and a hydrogen pressure of 20-35 atms. using a nickel catalyst. If desired the series of multi-tube reactors may be followed by a single-tube reactor. An example is given of the production of 2-ethylhexyl alcohol by hydrogenation of a -ethyl-b -propyl acrolein.
