Abstract

1,159,667. Hydration of olefins. HIBERNIA CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 22 July, 1966 [24 July, 1966], No. 12313/69. Divided out of 1,159,666. Heading C2C. In a continuous process for the hydration of C 2-6 mono-olefins to alcohols, olefin and water are fed to an exchange zone and then to a superheating zone at an elevated temperature and pressure, the heated reactants are passed to a hydration zone containing an acid catalyst supported on a porous carrier, the gas or gasliquid mixture is withdrawn from the hydration zone and conducted to the heat exchange zone to condense an alcohol-containing liquid, which is passed to a collecting zone, and leaving an alcohol-containing gas which is passed to a cooling zone from which the cooled gas is conducted to a washing zone at an elevated temperature and pressure, wherein the gas is washed with water to leave an olefin-containing gas, which is recycled to the hydration zone after make-up with olefin and water, and an alcohol containing liquid which is conducted to a collecting zone. It is preferred to effect hydration at 140-250‹ C. under a pressure of 10-100 atmospheres over a phosphoric acid catalyst. The alcohol may be recovered by distillation of the aqueous product. Examples relate to the preparation of isopropanol from propylene.
