Abstract

The invention comprises 3-amino-4-halogeno-5-alkylisoxazoles wherein the alkyl group has 1-5 carbon atoms, e.g. the 3-amino-4-chloro-, bromo- and iodo-5-methylisoxazoles, and their preparation by reacting a 3-amino-5-alkylisoxazole with a halogenating agent. Suitably the 3-amino-5-alkylisoxazoles may be halogenated directly, e.g. with bromine or chlorine in an inert organic solvent, or alternatively, the 3-amino-5-alkilisoxazole may be reacted with a mercuric halide and the resulting 3-amino-4-halogeno-mercuri (e.g. chloromercuri) - 5 - alkylisoxazole treated with a mixture of a halogen and its alkali-metal salt, e.g. aqueous iodine and potassium iodide to give the corresponding 3-amino-4-halogeno-5 -alkylisoxazole.
