Abstract

The invention comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:1002247/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrogen or lower alkyl containing from 1-6 carbon atoms; R2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl containing from 1-6 carbon atoms or nitro; R3 is hydrogen, lower alkyl containing 1-6 carbon atoms or halogen, R4 is alkyl or alkanoyloxy; R5 is hydrogen or fluorine; R6 is chlorine, fluorine, hydrogen or lower alkyl containing 1-6 carbon atoms and n is 0 or 1 and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting a steroid of the formula <FORM:1002247/C2/2> wherein R4, R5, and R6 are as defined above with a glycol of the formula <FORM:1002247/C2/3> wherein R, R1, R2, R3 and n are as defined above in the presence of a strong acid. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent in the temperature range 60-180 DEG C. Pharmaceutical compositions having progestational activity and containing the above compounds may be administered orally. With the further addition of an estrogenic agent, the compositions are useful for oral administration for the inhibition of conception.
