A rotatable armature for electromagnetic measuring or recording instruments comprises a bar of ferromagnetic material having in it at least one gap extending through the whole thickness of the armature, the gap being filled with a non-ferromagnetic material. The gap extends transversely across the armature with respect to the general direction of the lines of force which will pass through the armature from a surrounding magnetic field when the armature is in a zero position. This arrangement is said to eliminate hysteresis effects so that in the absence of a disturbing field the armature returns to its zero position.
