Abstract

1,001,515. Pneumatic springs. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 19, 1962 [June 27, 1961], No. 23138/61. Addition to 935,831. Heading F2S. A fluid spring assembly comprises an annular flexible envelope 10, one end of which is provided with a beaded edge 13 which is sealed in a fluid-tight manner between an annular boss 25 extending axially-inwardly from one side of a mounting member 24 and a frusto-conical member 28 detachably secured to the same side of the mounting member. As shown, the flexible envelope 10, formed with an upper convoluted portion 11 and a lower rolling diaphragm portion 12, has upper and lower beaded portions 13, 14 reinforced with wire rings 15, 16 and an inextensible ring 17 located in a waisted portion 18 which is of sufficiently large diameter to allow the lower bead 14 to pass therethrough. The upper bead 13 is clamped to the mounting member 24, around the inwardly tapering outer surface 26 of the hollow boss 25, by means of the annular plate 28 which is secured to the member 24 by bolts 29. The plate 28 has a frusto-conical portion 30 which clamps the bead 13 against the surface 26 and an outwardlyflared skirt portion 31. The lower bead 14 is fluid-tightly retained on a seat 19 around an upstanding pedestal 20 by a dished clamping plate 21 which is tightened into the bead 13 by bolts 22 screwed into the pedestal 20, the latter tapering outwardly from its upper end to increase the effective area of the rolling lobe 12 when the spring is compressed. On assembly, the lower bead 14 is first secured around the seat 19 and then the bolts 22 are tightened by a tool which is inserted into the envelope 10, the upper bolts 29 for tightening the upper bead being accessible from outside the spring.
