Abstract

Polymers of olefines, e.g. ethylene, are made by effecting the polymerization of the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) a metal, hydride, or organometallic compound of a metal of Group IVb, Vb, or VIb of the Periodic Table, (b) a halide of a metal of Group IVa, Va, or VIa of the Periodic Table, (c) a halide of an element of Group III of the Periodic Table, and in the presence of 0.5 to 1.5 gram mols. of water per gram atom of the metal present in (b). The polymerization is generally effected in a solvent in which at least part of the water is dissolved. The water may also be present in the monomer. The exemplified catalyst is TiCl4-Sn(C4H9)-AlCl3.
