Abstract
Insulating oils are obtained by alkylating benzene with an olefin, and hydrogenating the alkylate at 180-280 DEG C. and 20-80 kg./cm.2. Benzene is alkylated with a C8-C30 olefin in the presence of a Friedel-Craft catalyst and an oil of 25-45 cs. at 20 DEG C. separated; when the olefin is propylene tetramer a suitable fraction is one boiling in the 250-400 DEG C. range. The heavy alkylate is hydrogenated over a Group II-VII oxide or sulphide associated with a Group VIII metal or with a heavy metal or Group I or II or oxides or sulphides thereof, e.g. cobalt molybdate-alumina, at 0.5-2 vol./vol./hr. and 100-500 vols hydrogen (at N.T.P.) per vol. of charge.
