Abstract

1,001,219. Laminates. CIBA Ltd. July 8, 1964 [July 23, 1963], No. 28195/64. Heading B5N. In making thermoset laminates comprising sub-layers, e.g. of kraft paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin, and a coloured surface layer, the latter comprises a sheet of paper impregnated with an aqueous preparation of an aminoplast precondensate, a waterinsoluble dyestuff, and a filler, with or without a dyestuff fixative, such as a dicyandiamideammonium chloride-formaldehyde reaction product, and a wetting agent such as sodium dibutyl naphthalene sulphonate. The preferred aminoplast is melamine-formaldehyde and the preferred fillers titanium dioxide or zinc sulphide. The dyestuff preparation may include an optical brightener. An additional layer of unpigmented high grade paper may be used over or under the coloured layer. The various impregnated layers are preferably dried at sub-curing temperatures before assembly and hob-pressing. Substrates, e.g. of plywood, or glass fibre or synthetic resin phenols may be included in the laminates.
